New Rush album: Snakes and Arrows.
Rush is my favorite band and this album reminded my why. Aside from the sheer virtuosity of musical ability these three display; the quality of songwriting continues to amaze me. The themes discussed in Peart's lyrics always seem to strike at the heart of thoughts and feelings I've recently had while Lee's incredibly powerful yet nuanced (just how I like my cigars) singing drives-home the intensity and emotion Peart's words contain.
The sound of Snakes and Arrows (S&A) is very similar to Vapor Trails but clearly more acoustic-influenced. That's one of my favorite things about this band; their uncanny ability to evolve seemlessly right before our ears. You can hear the similarities between S&A and Vapor Trails, which in turn was in many ways a continuation of Test for Echo. The heaviness in Test for Echo (notably, "Time and Motion") seemed to emerge out of Counterparts. But listen to Counterparts then S&A and you have two totally different sounds. Again, a seemless evolution; but with very distinct individual elements. Any Rush fan worth his salt will have jumped with glee upon hearing that one resolving chord in "Far Cry" that caps off the opening rhythmic movement. Hemispheres! As if the band was saying "Remember that? That was us, so's this!" Simply outstanding. While certain songs on the album will have to "grow on me"; taken as a whole, S&A is yet another masterpiece in the endless evolution of this awesome band.

If I were you, I'd subscribe to the "Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom" forum in the "Usergroups" tab above.
This thread will be headed there shortly and is the proper forum for discussing all things musical here.

I listened to it about a week ago. I thought it sucked. And I am a Rush fan. I'll give it another listen and see if I change my mind.

Just for perspective, what are your three favorite Rush albums?

Interesting, Stogie. How do you feel about Test for Echo and Vapor Trails? Personally, I felt ambivalent about VT when it came out; but it very quickly grew on me and now I like it very much. Snakes and Arrows had more of an instant appeal for me. Maybe that's because I've already accepted the style changes that were implemented in VT. Maybe I'm thinking about this too hard.

Fair enough. I understand where you're coming from. I've been totally intolerant to bands' sound changes on occassion; I just happen to like this one.

Interesting. Rush was my favorite in early years. I felt they sold out and signals was the last album I listened to. Still listen to the old stuff, maybe I've been away long enough that new Rush won't make my teeth itch...
Regards, J.
