Using a salt test on your hygrometer is NOT a problem provided you don't let any of the salt slurry come in contact with the hygrometer. The warning provided by the manufacturer is simply to insure that they will not be held responsible if you ruin the hygrometer by accidently getting some salt water in it. Also, provided water and sufficient excess salt is present, the test will give a 75% Rh environment in a well sealed container. It is used because it is quite reliable and forgiving of the need for exact measurements of the water and salt. All you need is a well mixed saturated solution with some excess salt present. I do not recommend using plastic bags for the salt test, though. I will say that I have tested the Boveda calibration kit, courtesy of one of our fine members, and was quite successful with it even though it uses a plastic bag...
