JOSE MARTI — Handmade NIC
Wrapper: ECU SUM
Binder: HON
Filler: NIC/HON/DR
Medium Bodied
MSRP: ~ $2.50/ea

Appearance: 17/20 This has got to be one of the lightest Ecu Sumatra Wrappers I have ever seen. Still, only light veining and silky smooth. This is the best looking cigar that I have seen out of NATSA.

Construction: 16/20. Well capped, and wrapper appeared in great condition, but the cigar was a little mushy (too wet off the truck?), and had several serious soft spots. Burn on this cigar was to say the least ODD. It burned straight, but instead of coming to a cone shape, the ember appeared more like a 3 pronged fork than a solid peak. Ash while not flakey, also sort of "split" (due to the way the cigar was 'peaking').

Flavor: 30/50. I like JM as a rule, but there was something wrong with this one. Flavor started out almost non-existant for the first 1/2" or so. Once the cigar warmed up the flavor came also. You could taste the obvious NIC flavor that is standard in all of "Triki's" cigars, but with the combination of Dominican and Honduran tobacco it was notably muted (This is not necessarily a bad thing). Unfortunately a little past the half way point the cigar took on an almost rancid taste. For those that knock Nic cigars (like JM, La Finca, etc) saying that it makes them puke... I now understand where they are coming from. I pressed on a long as I could. Did a "blow out" to try to restore some smokability to the cigar to no avail. When I dry heaved, the cigar got heaved as well. I will have to try this again once again with one that is dried out a bit more.

Overall: 3/10. This was not what I was expecting from a Jose Marti cigar. I have generally enjoyed them in the past, and with this big sucker, just expected a LOOOOONGER time smoking, but that didn't seem to be the case. Dry Heaves definitely ruined my "overall experience" with this cigar.

Total: 66/100

Again, I will give this a "2nd Look" after they dry out a bit. But this was a major disappointment. At present I can only suggest sticking with smaller sizes, and giving these to someone who you want to leave you alone.
