Turns out the father of one of my son's Cub Scout pack members is Scott Pearce, the Executive Director of the IPCPR. Had an interesting conversation with him. Couple of nuggets:

He is proposing to change the name of the organization so it no longer has the initials CPR in the acronym

There are plans to open up memberships to non-industrial professionals (consumers) and allow consumer-members to attend the annual show. He also wants to hold more consumer-focused events (i.e. tastings, volunteer opportunities) and we talked a lot about legislative challenges, and the cigar industry in general. Really good guy.

From me, Tabacalera A. Fuente, and J.C. Newman have been on the forefront fighting for the cigar industry. They have been consistently advocating that jobs will be lost given the continuing assault on cigars by the Food and Drug Administration.

Might we glean some good news in all of this by the fact that J.C. Newman is preparing to enlarge their production capacity with a new facility?

What meaning, or trend, might this suggest for the rest of the cigar business? Can we feel encouraged?

Making it consumer-friendly will turn it into a zoo, imo. Lots of manufacturers will leave and just do business via rep with B&Ms, and the whole thing will turn into just another cigar festival.

I agree with this.
Now, perhaps one function during the week, but not the entire show. The exhibitors are not allowed to sell direct to customers, it is not a retail show, it brings all kinds of headaches into the situation.

It would also make Media Membership useless. It probably is just a spitball idea, but I really doubt that they can make it work without gypping someone.

Saw something today that indicates that they really are considering a "Consumer Day."

Why would I want to go to Las Vegas when there are consumer festivals all over the country?
