moisture

After not smoking pipes for years, I'm trying to get back into it, but I don't remember many of the finer points. Most notably, I can't get the moisture content right--it's either dry as toast or soggy. So, what is the ideal humidity (both the number and an indication as to how it should feel would be great)? Thanks.
