Sad! His unique voice and vocal style was immortalized by Procol Harum's monster hit, A Whiter Shade of Pale. Here is a link I posted a while ago for a 2006 orchestral version with the Denmark National Concert Orchestra. (you can skip the ad)

He was quite underrated, apart from this song and perhaps their other biggest hit, Conquistador, pronounced in his native English : kon-kwist--a-door.

He was part of that 1970-era group of artists who worked closely over the years, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, and likely Jeff Lynne. They worked on each others projects all down the years.

That's a fantastic performance, I've watched it a few times, now, over the last few years.
