You know, I'm just the opposite. My Rickenbacker 4001 has a very bright sound & I think it sounds punchier when the strings are broken in. I change my strings once a year- unless I break one. I'll replace the broken string for the night, but then have to put on the rest of the set. One new string & 3 old ones sounds odd.
