Great red wine at a fair price
I've mentioned this one before elsewhere but felt it deserved its own posting.
Domaine d'Aupilhac 2001 (Montpeyroux) This tremendously large-scale yet very refined red wine is produced by Sylvain Fadat, one of the great innovators of the region. He harvests from his vineyard plantings of southern Rhone varietals. This particular vintage weighs in at an astounding 14.5% alcohol by volume. It is, as one might expect from such ripe grapes, practically Port-like in consistency. The tannins are very apparent yet absolutely smooth in texture. This wine is delicious now. But if one can wait five to eight years, one will be rewarded with added complexity as the secondary aromas and flavours develop.
