I like Russell's Reserve, but if you want to experience the best ryes, you have to try Whistlepig. Order a shot neat at a bar and you will know immediately whether or not you like rye. The 18 year old Sazerac rye was the best of any I have tasted, but it's hard to find and it's very expensive.

It's all down to taste preference. I'm just the opposite. I love the peat, but I also like the flavor of Scotches that aren't peat forward. Balvenie Doublewood, Glenfiddich 15, Tomatin 12 to name a few. I've found that the M&H from Israel and the Kavalan from Taiwan fall in that arena and are very enjoyable.
