It's probably very similar. The gel you see in the humidifier cups and the like was actually invented to be mixed in with the soil of very dry, arid climates like Texas, New Mexico, etc. It's purpose was to absorb moisture and slowly release it over time. Someone realized the benefit to cigar humidification and voila.
