You could do the salt test to check the hygrometer, but if you have more than one hygro, it's easier to just check them against each other. If they are reading close to the same, then chances are they're both fairly accurate.

As 7070 said - soaking and setting up the sponge doesn't give you a true measure as to the accuracy of the hygrometer reading in % RH.
Since you have gone to all the trouble to do things right - I would recommend the salt test - that way you could adjust the hygrometer if it needs to be adjusted (and assuming the model you have can be adjusted) or at least you'll know how many % points to add or subtract from the reading your hygo is showing you.

Good Luck

Definitely do the salt test on your hygrometer. It's the only way to know where you are.

Mister Clean, congratulations on the humidor purchase...I remember when you were asking about humidors a few weeks back -- great to see you've purchased one!

And yes, definitely do a salt test... you'd be surprised in the amount of variance a lot of hygrometers ship with. Definitely worth your while. As Doc said, some can be adjusted while others cannot. If it cannot (most digital ones cannot), just add or subtract in your head..

If the hygrometer that came with your humidor is one of those cheapie analog ones, the best thing you can do is just toss it and get a decent digital one. You can get a new Western Caliber II digital on Ebay for about $11.00 now. Those brass ring analog ones that come with most humidors are junk IMO.
