Divers

Chelios named Ron Francis, Peter Forsberg, Alexei Zhamnov as the league's big time divers. But he singled out Paul Kariya for as the biggest diver in the league. "It's embarrassing. Maybe he's not embarrassed about it because he probably believes he's not doing it. That's how liars are."

Gotta love Chelios.

But he forgot to mention Thomas Holmstrom. Must have slipped his mind.

At least Kariya admits he's a diver. Unlike the rest of the offenders in the NHL. We'll see how these new fines and the "public listing" of divers changes things.

By the way, Holmstrom isn't a diver. He's just unsteady on his skates.

I read where the League will begin fining $1,000 per dive even if it isn't called during the game (that what you referring to, doohnibor?) The "L" will review and assess fines after the game if it is thought that diving occurred.

If they call a penalty I don't like the double call, where one guy goes for a penalty (usually hooking or tripping) and the other for diving. If it is a dive, then only the dive should get called.

Chelios is one of the hardest hitting, nastiest players in the league. I would love him on my team, but come on. EVERYONE takes one if the situation's right for their team. How many times have you seen someone going down the wing and the D just puts his stick on the mid-section of the winger... down he goes. They do it because it's a tactical advantage for their team.

Saying that, I do agree they need to call it more, if blatent. If someone dives trying to get a call.. then just let them play on. I don't agree about this after the game, video review fining for dives. That's a bunch of BS.

Cheers!

Hell, considering that most of these guys make around 15K a game, they can all afford it! That's not really my issue.

Diving is not a saftey issue, or a disipline issue. Things like hits to the head or other things should be up to the league to place fines, etc. This should be up to the refs to call on the ice and if they don't, the league should speak with them about it. How is someone not even there going to make a call via video to decide someone's intent? And then have the gall to tell them to pay for it!

Since you are an Avs fan, I can understand your concern for this retrospective review because it will probably cut your pp time in half.

As for the review, a lot of dives are hard to detect at game speed. But when you watch it in slo-mo, oh man, it is hilariously easy to spot. And Peter is among the best divers.

I say as long as they are reviewing the game film anyway, maybe the League should fine the referees for all of the blatant penalties that don't get called every game? Or better yet, fine the players that commit them?

Pete's a master, but I won't comment further, as I do like him on my team.

See, that is where it starts taking the game away from the refs and into some executive. Let them make the calls and leave it alone. If they think there is more diving, which I don't, then tell the refs to make the calls, i.e. obstruction this year.

Personally I don't think that it's an issue, but everyone has an opinion.

Yeah. That's worked really well.
