Goons
Every team used to have one, but I really don't see too many these days. Has the speed and skill required to win today resulted in the loss of these once highly prized players?

There are plenty out there, although the NHL has worked to reduce fighting in the game by assigning instigator penalties and third man in rules. Luckily the Bruins have a few guys who aren't afraid to go, and even more capable of delivering bone crushing hits. I like a good, physical game.

The Wings don't have any goons. Name a few for me.

The Wings don't have your typical goon but Shannahan and McCarty can throw hands pretty well. The big problem is the instigator rule. Guys are afraid of getting tossed and then suspended.

The whole goon thing has died off a lot since the McSorely (sp?) incident, IMO.

Probert and Kocur at least had some skill. Shanahan and McCarty are NOT goons.
A goon is someone like Oliwa (does he still play for NJ?). Goons can barely skate and are sent out to punish and harm other players. |

Actually, Oliwa is now wearing the Black and Gold!

The days of the Goons are gone. Nowadays teams have instigators/agitators like Maltby and Avery on the Wings, Tyson Nash, Matthew Barnaby and others like them.
Probert, Kocur, Grimsom and Domi are/were some of the best in recent years. I miss the old days!!!
