I watched the "Hall of Fame Game" last night; at least until it got rained out with 3 minutes left in the third quarter.

The new rule is supposed to promote returns. Off to a bad start;
not one of eight kickoffs made it past the 32 yard line.
A "twelfth man" on the kickoff team holds the ball for the kicker
then runs off the field. The kicking team lines up at the forty and the return team at the thirty-five. The ball is supposed to land in the "landing zone" between the goal line and the twenty.
Nobody else moves until the ball lands or is caught.
There will never be a turnover on a muffed kick; the returner will have
plenty of time to retrieve the ball. This is supposed to be a one year experiment. I hope it dies.

If they wanna see returns, they should adopt UFL Kickoff rules.

My question is simple: what was the new rule supposed to correct that the old one messed up? That's not asked sarcastically.

NFL kickers routinely kick the ball out of the end zone. They did this to cut back on injuries since returns, we are told, are the most dangerous plays in the game.
Now, there are no returns, due to booming kickoffs. So the NFL must introduce more fuckery to correct other recently enacted fuckery.

OK, I think I got it: Fix it until it breaks. Pretty much mirrors our culture on that point.

There's also the bit where a team has to declare an on-side kickoff to the refs and the other team, only in Q4, and only if said team is trailing. Also, the head coaches are going to be obligated to two interview by a sideline reporter (before kickoff and at the end of the game).

Roger Goodell isn't going anywhere. He does the owners' dirty work, he's the scapegoat and bad guy. In the mean time they're making more money than they ever have. Nothing positive will ever happen for the fans.

Sadly, I still like to watch it. What will finally sour me is the gradual evolution to full pay per view, which might take a while, but my gut tells me is inevitable as the greedy bastards want every dollar they can squeeze out of fans.
