Planning your cigar lineup?
Do you plan your cigar lineup on the days that you know you will be having two or more, or do you go strictly by what you're in the mood for at that moment? Of course I'm sure that most experience some of both, but mainly wondering......if you know that you will be smoking multiple cigars within a close time frame of each other, do you make a conscious decision to smoke a particular cigar first/last? Do you tend to smoke the favorite first or last? Do you smoke the strongest first or last?
I usually tend to save the strongest for last, but a lot of times if the strongest happens to be my favorite I'll start off with that one, with the reason being I want to taste the full flavor of that particular cigar without "suffering"? the effects of the previous cigars. I have certain cigars that I save or put into that rotation for that very reason. For example, I like the Fausto quite a bit, BUT I wouldn't say it's my favorite.......if planning on smoking one of these, I usually save it for last in the lineup because I know the strength will hold up to following several other cigars and still be enjoyable. I know this is putting WAY too much thought into the enjoyment of cigars for most, but it's just part of my nature, and was wondering if others if others shared my affliction?????

I tend to be pretty much spontaneous. The main exception being when I'm going to be away from home, like tailgating on game days. Then I'll give a little thought to what I'm going to take with me. Even when I'm going to the B&M to smoke (I always buy there to smoke there), I just walk into the humidor and see which smokes call out to me.

I let the cigar choose me. Works every time.

Yes, I usually go mild body to full body. That way I don't mess up flavors of the proceeding cigars. For instance, I won't smoke a Liga Privada followed by a Davidoff or something. I would never taste the Davidoff. Either that, or I choose cigars all of the time type. For instance, if take one of my Ligas, I might pair it with a Oliva Serie V, Camacho Diploma, LFD or Padron. That way, it doesn't matter the order.

Yes--I plan mine. Like MR, light to heavy, but can schedule a "reboot" if a meal comes into play that might "cleanse" my palate, especially if there are more than one new cigars.
But, like Gael, I also think a good cigar will come thru any others smoked previously. I've experienced it many times. So it can also be dependent on the cigar.

I will also load on the end old stand-bys (not necessarily favorites) to smoke after my taste buds have been blown out. For instance, wanting a cigar(s) on the drive home after a long afternoon herf.

If I am going to be away for a weekend, I'll pack a few cigars that I think I may want. I usually bring more than I can smoke, so I have a selection. If I am at home, I never have a predetermined line-up. I simply smoke what I am in the mood for at that moment.

If I am smoking more than one cigar, I look at my collection and whatever hits me as a cigar I feel like smoking it makes the lineup. I don't really consider strength, or flavor, I just look at the cigars and smoke what I think will be good.

That's my approach as well.

Nothing too complicated with me. I keep 6 humidors and simply go in rotation. More times than not I'll simply open up the humidor and select whatever grabs me at the spur of the moment.
The only time I'll ever deviate is if I'm going to smoke during a sporting event. Then I'll deliberately grab a Churchill for the occasion. |
