Euro 2012 qualifying draw:

GROUP A: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Belgium, Austria, Turkey, Germany
GROUP B: Andorra, Armenia, Macedonia, Republic of Ireland, Slovakia, Russia
GROUP C: Faroe Islands, Estonia, Slovenia, Northern Ireland, Serbia, Italy
GROUP D: Luxembourg, Albania, Belarus, Bosnia, Romania, France
GROUP E: San Marino, Moldova, Hungary, Finland, Sweden, Netherlands
GROUP F: Malta, Georgia, Latvia, Israel, Greece, Croatia

The road to the finals kicks off in September through to October 2011 with the nine group winners automatically qualifying for the tournament together with the runner-up with the best overall record

The eight other runners-up will then face play-offs over two legs in November 2011.
Poland and Ukraine will be only the third co-hosts of the European Championship, following in the footsteps of Belgium and the Netherlands in 2000 and Austria and Switzerland in 2008.

Interesting, that group A. Germany, Turkey (biggest immigrant group in Germany) and neighbors, Austria (usually dirty) is comprised as it is. No accident, IMO. Too bad they didn't put Spain and England in there, too.

Interesting that they listed the likely winners of each bracket last in order.

Thanks for the heads up Phil. I remember watching this a couple of years ago but never got into the qualifying...

So the 9 group winners move through with one other team that didn't win their group, but had the best record of the non-winners...10 teams?

Then the remaining 8 runners up play in a playoff...meaning that there are 4 match-ups played over two games? So 4 move on from the runners up playoff?..or do those 4 winners then play another 2-leg match up to produce only two winners, etc. Obviously I am confused on the runners up playoff.

Correct.

That's the way it works.

Obviously I am confused on the runners up playoff.

You're not confused. You just forgot one thing. Poland and Ukraine (the co-hosts) do not have to go through qualification and will round out the field of 16.

Ah ha! thanks...14, 12 or 11 teams seemed like a weird way to set up a tournament.

Looking forward to these, I hope my normal foreign live streams come through with some of these matches. Particularly I would like to see how Ireland takes on the Euro.
