Thanks Don, I did read through that thread a couple days ago. While the tips are great they didn't help me keep the pipe lit. I'm sure I'll get better at packing the bowl in time.
Since I still dip snuff and smoke full-bodied cigars, I ordered some Nightcap, maybe that will satisfy me more. I will also take a few days off to let my taste buds heal. One question I do have....When you light the pipe for the first time, how much of the flame should be drawn into the tobacco? And how long before I take the flame away? One article said it takes 20 seconds, maybe I really didn't have it lit from the beginning.

BB - time and practice will take care of this! Relax! That's what pipe smoking is about.
When you first light the bowl, it may go out shortly thereafter. Some people call the first light a "false light." Lightly tamp the tobacco, then re-light. Simply run your lighter or match around the surface a few times as you puff. You should be good to go! One observation - is your tobacco new? If so, it may be a little wet. This can cause some of the problems you mention. Leave a little out for a 1/2 hour or so before you smoke it if it is new. Good luck! |

BB, Iwan Ries has some nice Petersons in the specials section for $40.
I too had trouble with the lighter smoke when first trying the pipe. But I got some full english blends and problem solved. I have not found one that equals the nice kick of a Camacho yet though. |
