Any of you experts tried this port? I had a splash after dinner while on a cruise recently and really enjoyed it. I tried to locate it at the duty free shops but no luck. About two weeks ago I was in a local wine shop and low and behold they had 5 bottles there. I was going to pick one up when the wife said to let my oldest son purchase it as my Christmas gift. Fine by me. Yesterday my wife tells me that when she went to pick it up for my son (driving in Christmas Eve) they were out. Not a bottle of Smith Woodhouse to be found.

Anyway, if anyone has experience with this brand and knows of another brand that may come close in profile, I would be happy to try it until I can find the Smith Woodhouse.

Haven't had it yet. I purchased a few bottle of the 2000 vintage, but I'm letting them sit a few more years.

How long do you plan to age them and under what kind of conditions?

The straight Vintage Smith Woodhouse and the Vintage Single Quinta Smith Woodhouse Madalena represent tremendous Ports, as both often nudge - if not equal - the more renowned Symington marks such as Dow's and Graham's in terms of quality. I have found they tend to bridge the stylistic range between the drier Dow's and the plusher Graham's, exhibiting excellent balance and grip.

The Madalena usually comes around sooner than the straight Vintage, and can be quite lovely beyond 8 to 10 years from issue. 2000 was, by the way, a very fine year for Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port. I would anticipate this particular one to take a good 15 to 17 years to begin hitting its stride (i.e. 2015 to 2017).

Anyone lucky enough to have some 1977 still stashed away?

Great info Jazznut - so if I were to purchase a quality port that I could drink now what would you recomend?
