I'm a non-drinker but my father who is retired and dosen't have an unlimited budget loves his scotch.

I know nothing about it other than he buys blended and inexpensive. I did ask him about single malts but he told me he had never tried one.

I would love to buy him a bottle of good whiskey on occassion but have no idea what to buy.

I need suggestions but the problem I have is that I live in Alabama and our supply of alchoholic beverages is completely controlled by the state. So I'll need brands that are well known. Rare or limited production stuff will not be in the state owned stores.

Macallan is good and so is Oban. Depending on his likes/dislikes, many of the single malts are excellent.

I agree - Macallan is very good - specially 18 yr old Macallan.

As far as blended scotch goes, Chivas is the only one I like. If he's a budget scotch drinker he'll appreciate either of those.

And I hear ya about the state controlled liquor. VA is the same way, but we can buy beer and wine at the grocery stores and wine shops. I don't have any trouble finding either of my favs, and being that they are REALLY popular, you shouldn't either.

If not MacAllan, stay with Highland single malts. There are a number of varieties based upon where they are distilled and the water, etc., available there. I know there are those here more knowledgeable than I so I will defer...
Does Alabama have a site like New Hampshire does with their specials, etc?

I think Macallan 12 should be available almost anywhere, and it should be less than $40.00. It's a very good whisky and should appeal to someone who isn't familiar with single malts. Stay away from Laprohaig or Lagavulin, the most widely available Isalys - they're great whiskies, but if he's never done the single malt thing they'd probably be way too much for him.

Oban... heck Glenlivet, Glenmorangie or Glenfiddich will be treats if he's never tried one. I have found that sometimes this doesn't work - my brother does not like expesnive cigars based on a lifetime of machine made homogenized leaf wrapper smoking. He just doesn;t like the taste of the higher dollar cigars. He does like some of JRs cheaper cigars, though, so it proves it is all about what you like...

If your dad likes his blends, a couple of good ones are J&B Select, Ballantine's 12 and Famouse Grouse 12. They should be widely available too.

As far as I know the state dosen't have a web site advertising any specials. But I'll look around.

I know the Famous Grouse and both Glenlivet and Glenfidich are avaliable. I'll have to check on the Macallan.

I feel like he'll be fine with more expensive scotches. He does have a faily educated pallette.
