David Allen Coe

I was drunk , the day my momma, got outta prison..

(I love that song and it seems like everyone sings the last verse at the top of their lungs at every company christmas party, billiard hall, or bar Ive ever been too. Do people outside Texas sing this song at company parties too ?)

It's a little sad that he's "known" for just that one song, considering the quality body of work he has produced throughout his career.

Kind of like Ray Wylie Hubbard being known for "Up Against the Wall."

I'm not far from Texas and originally from there, but no I have never heard that song sung at any of our Christmas parties. Heard lots of drunks there singing lots of other songs though.

As far as DAC goes though, I absolutely love his stuff. He's a wild ass redneck that don't give a flying sh$t about what anyone else thinks about it.

I saw him and Dr. John together (go figure) in a club in Woodward OK a few years back and it was one of the best club shows that I have ever seen. Even considering that DAC was about three sheets in the wind, drinking a bottle of Crown all the while he was up performing., it was a great show.

I was thumbin' back from Montgomery
with a guitar on my back
When a stranger pulled up beside me in an antique Cadillac.
Well, he was dressed like 1950, half drunk and hallow eyed
Its a long walk to Nashville, would you like a ride, son.
I sat down in the front seat, and turned on the radio
and them sad old songs comin' outta them speakers was solid country gold.
Then I noticed the stranger was ghost white pale when he asked me for a light.
And knew there was somethin' strange about this ride.

CHORUS:
He said: Mister can you make folks cry when you play and sang.
Can you pay your dues, can you moan the blues
Can you bend them guitar strangs.
He said: Boy, can you make folks feel what you feel inside,
Cause if your big star bound let me warn you its a long hard ride.

Well, he cried just south of Nashville, and he turned that car around.
he said: (spoken) this is where you get off, boy
cause I'm going back to Alabam'.
I stepped out of that ole Cadillac and I said Mister, many thanks.
he said you don't have to call me mister, Mister.
The whole world calls me Hank.

I still get cold chills every time I hear that one.

he's written some great songs through out his career, but these days his band sucks AND he looks like walking death.

Any of you ever heard The Underground Album? I hadn't until a guy at work brought it in for me to borrow. I've never hear a more "wrong" album in all my life. Funny as hell at times but about as un-"PC" as you can probably get.
