Tin art on bulk tobacco mason jars
I prefer to buy tins of tobacco because of the tin art but buying bulk is a better buy price wise so I came up with a way to add a bit of tin art to my bulk baccys in mason jars. Best of both worlds sort of thing. I create a jpg label with photo editing software, print it out on photo paper and cut it to fit the top of my masons. Takes less time than you'd think and makes the cellar look better!

I just fill them, loosely put the lid on, heat them in boiling water for about a minute, take them out, then screw the lid on tight.

Ahhhhh......just like we used to do with the old canning of veggies just a lot shorter.
Buying in bulk though...hmmmmm....Maybe when I go out of town....only one shop here and their selection just absolutely sucks. It's almost exclusively Lane Ltd. stuff.

PS: The jarvac also works to reseal an open tin! Say you have some tins of a certain year release of VA flakes aging in your cellar. You want to try it and see where it is in the aging process but don't want to break that seal. Break it! Try the VA and if it's not where you think it should be, reseal the jar! The jarvac will seal it again with a very slight vacuum and the aging process can resume. It, of course, will not work to reseal a tin that comes with a plastic lid to seal the top after you've removed it like McClelland or Rattrays. However, I've had some success resealing a tin of Rattrays with a widemouth mason lid in the Deni. Just the top part of the lid without the band. The Jarvac works for a lot of other uses in the kitchen, for which it was actually made (which will help justifying the cost with the Mrs). Mine sees some use in the kitchen. Mostly for marinating meat or sealing an unfinished bottle of wine although most of the work mine sees is with tobacco canning. If theres's anything you want to can, without having to heat it up first, the Deni is the unit for that. I wrote up a review of the Deni Jarvac and posted it here in this forum already some time ago. http://forums.cigarweekly.com/viewtopic.php?t=138102

If you see a label that I've already made that you'd like to use, send me a message and I'll email you a word document with the label on it. All you'll need to do is to print it, cut it and glue stick it onto your jar lids.
I'll need to know which size jar lid you're using.

I'm going to ask a silly question. Even back in the old days when I was smoking my pipes a lot....five pounds of tobacco would be enough to last me for YEARS. Or at least I would think it would be. How much are you buying and how many jars do you have storing. As you can see I'm new to the storage part of this.
I'm moving more to my pipes now as cost saving measure and also because I'm finding I really enjoy it. I can't believe that I ever quit except for my jaw surgery years ago when I couldn't even pretend to hold a pipe. Even now my old heavy one are relegated to when I don't want to do anything but sit and watch the tube or sit outside. I just can't hold them without hurting later. Anyway, this looks like fun and I can try a lot of things for not nearly as much as cigars, but I'll never give up my cigars!!!

I only have about 40 lbs in my cellar but I'm working on it. How many jars? Don't know, I've never counted them. There's quite a few in there though.
