MLB going the way of the NHL?
I think we've discussed this before, but one of the sports writers in our local rag(St Pete Times) lamented how the Mets signing of Beltran is the beginning of the end for baseball. Said this was the 10th, $100 million
contract in MLB, and none have been worth the money. Concluded that the stupid owners are going to have to have a lock-out, like hockey, to protect them from....................THEMSELVES! Meanwhile, my Devil Rays are doing their part in keeping salaries low. |

No kidding. They lock out the employees because they're freaking morons.

It will end when we all need a subscription to team networks to watch a game on tv, and the general public can no longer afford ticket prices at the stadiums.

I'm usually a pro-management, anti-union kinda guy, but I think, as I understand it, the NHL owners are wrong. The owner of the Rangers probably has 3X the revenues of the Lightning. To say that they need a "hard" cap of $35-$45 million makes no sense. The Ranger TV/radio contract is way more valuable then the Lightnings, and their ticket prices are probably close to 2X what we pay here. Are the Rangers going to cut ticket prices in half when their salaries are capped? Hey, I understand the Rangers can spend more then the Lightning. Impose a penalty for "excessive" spending on these teams with the money going to the "poorer" teams i.e. Lightning AS LONG AS they spend a minimum to begin with.

Even if they are not charging for it now, just wait. And ticket prices are already getting there for some people.

I saw a cartoon once and it really struck me.
It was called the NFL Owners' Dream. There was a football game going on, but instead of a stadium full of fans, there was a stadium-like structre of buildings surrounding the field with a few individuals on balconies and the roof. It's coming. Look at the Staples' Center if you doubt.

The minute that they start with the subscribe to get everything, I'm done with pro sports. I love my Braves games, Falcons and Steelers. But I WON'T subscribe to a pay per view type of system to see the games.
What will happen then is that college baseball will become BIG TIME popular.

TBS really reduced the number of televised games last year. Now, why do you think that is?

'Kerch, I think it's partly due to overstaturation of the TV market with baseball.
