Pipe Filters

I did a search and didn't come up with much.

I've never used filters in my limited time enjoying pipes. Happened to see a picture of a Missouri Meerschaum recently that had a transparent stem with a filter installed. It got me thinking......

What do you all think about using filters? Are there certain types of pipes, or pipe smokers, that need them?

When I first tried pipes in college, I remember turning drug store cob pipes and heavily cased tobacco into a bubble pipe almost instantly because I didn't know any better. I imagine a filer may have helped me at that time.

I don’t use pipe filters. No reason, just never used them.

I was told from a tobacco merchant the filter is used to capture the accumulated moisture created from heavily cased tobaccos as it is being smoked. This moisture can be bitter tasting.

I did a little reading up on filters last night. From what I read, they do provide a cooler, drier, and less flavorful smoke. They will also keep microparticles of tobacco and ash from ending up in your mouth. I'm not that fussy.

That's what got me thinking about if their use is dominated by those that have yet to figure out how to smoke their pipe without creating excessive moisture and heat.
