Is There Possibly an Olympic Sport Dumber Than Curling?

I mean, maybe the rifle on skis event, but curling?! Seriously? It is like shuffleboard on ice. I get freezing cold, five month long winters driving you crazy to the point of inventing ice fishing just so you can get out of the house for a while, but curling?! Whoever invented that was so freaking bored that the correct answer would have been: move south.
Seriously, how much of a nerd do you have to be as a kid to say “when I grow up I want to be a curler.”
This could be the absolute stupidest sport EVER.

What's nuts is , if you look up the rule book for curling (World Curling Federation) , there are 67 pages in the rule book...

Right up there with basketball.

FWIW, curling is my favorite winter sports. The skill and strategy fascinate me and the only time I get to watch it is at the winter games.

For my money, the arials and the half pipe shouldn't be Olympic sports any more than motocross biking and skateboarding belong in the summer games.

Agree 110%... Don't knock it until you've tried it. It really is a lot of fun as well as being a tremendously challenging game.

I would love to try it someday. Just isn't much call for it here except during the games. There is a local ice rink that sets up a couple of curling lanes, but I'm not able to move like that right now.

I think I turned a couple of the guys at the cigar bar onto it yesterday. Once you explain the game and how it is played, people are more open to watching it. Somebody called it "shuffleboard on ice". It's a wee bit more complicated than shuffleboard.

I just found this thread and it just about cracked me up. The first time I saw curling,it left my jaw hanging. Two nuts on skates beating at a collapsed bowling ball with brooms as it was sliding across a patch of ice. I asked my dad why he had turned off the sports and turned on Monty python.

So many thoughts. One thing I've wondered for years now, has anyone ever died after being whomped on the head with a curling stone? I should write a screenplay for masterpiece mystery; hercule poirot and the murder at flat rock. If that doesn't make me wealthy, I should go into business making curling stones. Seriously, how may people could possibly be in the field of glueing handles on rocks?

In any case, I guess with global warming, curling is about to slip into the same obscurity as competitive goat milking did back in 1880. Better watch it while you can.

The stones are quarried at a specific granite mountain in Scotland. Once quarried, they are finished by hand to make sure that the stones are as identical as possible. Even so, there's a subtle difference between stones and part of the first end is to winnow out which stones are better than others so that they can be pushed to the end, when the skip is throwing the last two. There are even sensors in each stone that goes off when you release it over the hogline.

The subtleties of the sport are easily passed over. It's a lot like a combination of chess and pool.
