We were discussing this exact question throughout the Gold Cup. When it was first posed to me, I was like "no way". But as I sat there I could not name another player who has been more productive and influential for the National Team.
After thinking about it, despite not having the international success of some others, I'd have to say he is the greatest US soccer player ever...over guys like Claudio Reyna, Tab Ramos, Eric Wynalda, Brian McBride & Clint Dempsey.
For what it is worth, I did not include Brad Friedel, Kasey Keller or Tim Howard into this discussion.

I'd like to see him knock in a goal in the world cup finals, say a header in extra time to lift the US to a win... then it would be no debate...

the problem with any argument about him is he plays on a better team than the US has had, or so I think, but of course expectations are higher (look what that does to England in World Cup)

His goal against Algeria in extra time advancing to the sweet 16 was pretty damn close...minus the head ball.

What a fuckup. He wanted Champions' League football, but wasn't going to get it at Fulham. Didn't get it at Spurs either, now he's got a LEGIT.shot as he and Eddie Johnson will tear up MLS. Too bad it'll be CONCACAF Champions' League.

He was nearly a Fulham legend, should have kept his ass put at Craven Cottage, and would have been hailed with the likes of Bobby Moore, Johnny Haynes, Rodney Marsh, and Brian McBride. But nooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Liverpool tap him up, and his head gets big. But he gets his money.
