Coffee with a good smoke

If anyone likes coffee with a smoke, what kind of coffee do you prefer? I'm a big coffee drinker and have always like to try different types. I drink it straight up so I'm trying to get an idea of some other brands to try when I partake in a stick.

I moved this thread in here, where we talk coffee on a regular basis. Many of us roast our own coffee. We found out how dirt simple it is to do that, how much less expensive than, say, $tarbucks, and that there is no coffee available anywhere that is better than truly fresh-roasted coffee.

If you're interested in taking the plunge, there is a ton of information in this room. Check the Common Coffee Conundrums sticky at the top of the page.

As to the subject of your post, my go-to coffees lately have been 3 from Burman:

Indonesian Bali Kintamani Natural (going on 20lbs in the last 3 months)
Brazil Bob-O-Link (on my second 5lb bag)
Indian Mysore Chikmagalur

All are really excellent, and I'm liking the rotation a lot. I roast each just to the first soft snaps of second crack, and rest them 12-36 hours before brewing.

In general, Ethiopians are my favorite coffees, but finding a really good one has been extremely difficult since the export authorities decided to start homogenizing the harvests. Some of the micro-lots that we've had in the past (Idido Misty Valley, Beloya 25, etc.) were stellar, but those may be a thing of the past.

Final note: Nothing pairs with a cigar better than a big mug of fresh roasted coffee.

I do like Sumatra, but I can't drink it all the time. Sumatra is a very earthy coffee and I'm not always in the mood for the flavor profile. Right now I've got Ethiopian Yergachef, Guatamalen and some Galapagos roasted up. I was able to pull off a nice espresso blend yesterday. It was a free hand blend, so I'm sure I couldn't do that exact blend again.

So very true.

I'm finishing up my first batch of Brazil Bob-O-Link and about Wednesday will start on the Tanzanian Peaberry I roasted yesterday evening while I had a pork loin in the smoker.

IMO it's a matter of personal taste, the enjoyment is in the search for the right pairing. Also, don't be surprised if its a moving target.

Great info!!! My apologies for posting this in the wrong area. I've been wanting to roast my own, but thought it would be a pain. I'm sure once I do it, I'll never go back.

I need to read up on it again, plus get the correct tools to roast, store, etc.

When I do a search all seem reasonable priced also, which is great!

By the way, the logo on my avitar is just a logo that was found at the time. I rarely drink $tarbucks. I'm not a big fan...my wife is though, cause she puts enough cream and sugar to turn it into a milk shake, so taste doesn't matter.

Kasey, you got to pick up a West bend Poppery at a local thrift shop and roast up a batch of coffee and you will be hooked. Sooo easy and surprisingly cheap.

I tell you what. You find a $5 popper and I'll send you a green coffee bean sampler and we'll guide you though the simple process.

Just make sure it's the original West Bend Poppery, 1500 watts. That's important.

A note on Poppery models. You're unlikely to find an Original Poppery in thrift stores, though it could happen. I've gotten lucky as couple of times, but not in the last 3 years or so. However, I have laid in a lifetime supply by prowling eBay:

Poppery II models can work fine, though I've found much more inconsistency in them than in the OPs.

You could go "off the deep end" as my wife says about me. I've got an RK drum roaster in a highly modified BBQ gas grill. I can roast up two pounds of coffee in about 15 minutes with no problems. Expect your wife to look at you like WTF do you think you're doing with THAT??
