How about some Wild Turkey 101?
That good old Wild Turkey from Kentucky is the subject of my latest feature on the Cigar Weekly Home Page. Have yourself a 'look-see' HERE.
WT101 has long been one of my favourite Bourbons. How does it rank in your books? And, as always, I hope you enjoy the read.

A never-disappoint beverage.

Top notch. I pick it over anything in that price range.
When I was growing up it was the benchmark. |

Nice review... As I have said many times before Woodford Reserve is my go to... Have been trying a couple of others , don't like Buffalo Trace (sorry John) , currently into Angels Envy , it's too smooth... I blow thru it too fast... I had been considering the 101 based on a couple of friends suggestion... I have to be careful on their recommendations as they can afford anything pretty much... (Willet , Pappy etc...) and now your review... So , if I try 101 , chances it's up my alley ?? Dan |

Great work as always, Doug. It amazes me how refined your palate is.
I see they've changed labels. Any corresponding changes to the mashbill or aging like some other bourbons?

I'd say there are two key differences between Woodford Reserve and WT101, Dan. The WR is more floral (even a little 'funky') on the nose, and displays just a faint hint of smokiness as well. The WT101 is, perhaps, a touch sweeter on the palate, although that sweetness is handily counterpointed by the rye 'snap' and oak. I'll admit I've never been a big fan of Woodford Reserve (either the regular bottling or the Double Barrel version). I find it a serviceable 'middle of the road' sort of Bourbon, but little more.

The current expression is certainly a younger whiskey overall than those WT101 releases of old. My guess is that there's a good dollup of 3-to-4-year old spirit (along with the stated 'up to 6 to 8-year old' whiskies) in the mix. The main area in which this change makes itself known (at least to my palate) is in a slight diminution in textural richness. The actual flavour profile, however, doesn't seem to have been altered all that much.

I don't drink WT often, but often enough to appreciate it. Recent sampling, I agree, it is younger, but not so young as to be a concern that it 'is not what it once was'.
I think younger rather than changed mashbill is the trend right now across the spectrum Not entirely on topic here but I passed on an opportunity for Handy at 600 or Stagg at 700 or Parker Heritage 27 year at 2800 yesterday. Also passed on 50 year old Tamdhu at 18,000

I guess I'll look for the old label until it's gone.

The changes between the two no-age-statement releases are minimal (if at all existent). There IS a difference, however, between the 8-year old version of yore and newer NAS releases.
Dusty shelf searches, anyone?
