Newark Show Report
Today's Newark Show was sparsely attended. I think in part it is due to the smoking ban in NJ. Probably more of a factor was the proximity to the Chicago Show. I think a lot of folks were spent out, so to speak.
In any event, I drove down with David Bull and Tom Santucci of the pipe club in Wilkes Barre, PA - the Pocono Intermountain Pipe Enclave ("PIPE" - get it?). We arrived in plenty of time, despite the traffic. There were some good exhibits, including Smoker's Haven, Hayes Tobacconists from VA, and Jay and Louise from Hermit Farm. I sold some stuff and bought two Ashtons - a XXX deeply blasted billiard, and a LARGE LX stack billiard. I also picked up a tin of 2000 Christmas Cheer, and a tin of McClelland No.1 from 1996. Lou Ziholtsz came in and set up a table with samples of the new C&D blends. I picked up some "Red Carpet" and some "Sunday Picnic." I am smoking the red carpet now. It is a VA based blend with quite a bit of Orientals. A little heavy on the Orientals, in fact, for my taste. There was a new exhibitor - Wallace Pipe Cabinets. They are made by Virginia based cabinetmaker John Spake. They are extraordinary - beautifully made with exotic woods. One caught my eye - it holds 33 pipes and is made of maple. The front panels are inset with a Russian birch burl. The price for the show was $575, and it seemed a value, believe it or not. You can see one of his cabinets at http://www.pipecabinets.com/index.html We stopped at JR in Parsippany on the way back. Quite a place - everything from discount ties to nuts to novelty items to perfume. And of course a huge humidor. And I mean huge. All in all, a nice trip.
