Newbie to pipes - tobacco suggestions?

Well, I've been intrigued long enough, so I've taken the plunge into pipe smoking. Picked up a small clay pipe today, and actually made my own pipe last night from hard maple (it smoked a bit too rustic for me, hence the clay). I don't have the workshop set up to make a proper pipe bowl, so that might have been part of the problem. May still make another pipe from a more-dense wood and a better tool to drill out the bowl, but we'll see how things go.

I've got a bit of cheap-o aromatic tobacco to test the waters, any recommendations for other newbie-friendly tobaccos to try?

My first bowl didn't seem to produce a lot of flavor in comparison to cigars, not sure if that was the tobacco, my poor lighting technique, the pipe, or just how its supposed to be!
