Southern Draw Firethorn Robusto
The cigar has a somewhat veiny but otherwise beautiful Habano wrapper with rich deep tobacco notes from the wrapper and shaggy foot. Brand owner Robert Holt guarantees a perfect draw, and sure enough, there it is.
Initial notes are almost all wrapper thanks to the shaggy foot, and they're very good. Getting into the filler, it's all aged tobacco at the start, also a very good thing. A firm light grey ash emerges from an even burn. Approaching 1/3 some toasty notes with a light touch of ginger have emerged. The hoppiness of the beer is definitely helping my palate with the flavors. The ash is still firm, although I will knock it off to avoid ashes in my lap. The burn is still pretty even. For anyone who doesn't know, Southern Draw cigars are rolled at the A.J. Fernandez factory, which basically means the construction is perfect. Approaching half way, the light ginger notes have given way to white pepper notes complementing the rich aged tobacco notes. The ash has darkened a bit and remains firm. The cigar is smoking nice and slow, making for a very smooth and cool smoke. The pepper notes are still present but are not building, keeping the smoke from being harsh. The last time I had a Firethorn I smoked an Amish Broadleaf panatella; the wrapper, tasty as it was, overwhelmed the filler. This Habano wrapper is a much better match. At 2/3 the subtleties of the white pepper notes have been replaced by the more straightforward notes of black pepper, but are still not overwhelming. The burn continues to be good and the ash remains solid. The Firethorn blend has some complexity although the wonderful flavors of the aged filler will keep most of your attention. Even without purging the smoke remains cool. The finish is a little heavy, but not enough to be harsh. Put this one down just past the one inch mark. A very pleasant cigar that I would smoke any time of day, it definitely has a place in any cigar lover's rotation. Overall I give it a 8.75/10. Joe Bob says check it out.
