Beer thoughts thread

Yeah, yeah...there's one of these somewhere down the list, but it's far enough down to qualify for thread necromancy status. So take your link to the previous thread and...um...well, you know, no names (rhymes with radhawg)...

(And if this got to be a sticky, people could freely share their thoughts on great and not-so-great beers they have discovered without searching...)

Today,
Great - Rogue Double Dead Guy - I have had this one before, just found it locally (although it may have been here before, but I was looking for the pink/we love boobies bottle). You have to like hoppy, although not, "hey, what would happen if we threw an extra 2 shovels of hops into the mix" hoppy. But it's pretty epic. Rogue Brewing, Portland OR.

Meh to Good - Pike Extra Stout - I imagine they were aiming at Guinness; too bad they fell a bit short. By no means a bad beer, but there are a lot better. Pike Brewing Company, Seattle.

Last weekend,
Great - Jester King Black Metal Imperial Stout - this beer is the kind of brew that deserves a really fine cigar and the, "whoa!" reaction, as well as goblet presentation over pilsner/pint glass. The only fault I find with this beer is the ~$15/750ml bottle price. Jester King Brewery, Austin.

Also great - Rogue Dead Guy growler - because Dead Guy wasn't epic enough, now you can get it in a 1/2 gallon growler for < $18. Not as great as Double Dead Guy (well, duh), but an excellent beer. Rogue Brewing

Good-to-great - Mardesous Trippel - a very good Belgian. Not Chimay blue-lable, but still a very nice glass of beer. Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat NV, Belgium.

Also (to cross-reference this thread to the coffee threads) I noticed today that Jester King has a new brew using chipotle and kopi luwak...had me at chipotle, lost me at kopi luwak...

To be clear, did not try.

I'm still an IPA guy, and lately going for IPAs in cans, because they pack better in a bicycle trunk sack.

Dales is the old reliable. (Oskar Blue's)

Modus Hoperandi is exceptional. (Ska)

Ranger makes a nice one with flowery hops (New Belgium)

Corruption IPA adds honey malt making for a chewy, semi-sweet liquid lunch (DC Brau)

Deviant Dale's meets this last mold as well. (Oskar Blue's)

I bought the two cases of assorted octo beers, and it's reminded me that I just like the marzen style in almost any maker. I'm lately looking forward to pilsners and lagers, and leaving out the darker beers that used to be my go to.

I like to try new beers when I'm out,
but I always have Abita Amber and
Heineken in the fridge.

The Maharaja from Avery in Colorado. They call it an Imperial IPA, I'd call it an Imperial Pale Ale. Either way it's one of the best beers I've ever had and that's a long friggin list. Avery is doing a series they call the dictator series and it's one of those. Available in draught and 22oz only.

Palmetto Amber Ale. Love it. Balanced up front but with a good dry hoppy finish. A great plae ale. It's a local brewery here in Charleston, so I can't be sure of the distribution range.

Sierra Nevada Tumbler. Supposed to be an autumn brown ale. Not sure what they think that's supposed to taste like but this really misses the mark. Thin, dry and uneventful.

Abita Vanilla Double Dog. It's a Double Turbo Dog, with vanilla beans added during the aging. If you like heavy malty dark brews, and I do, this is one to get. Stellar.

I'm not that big a fan of IPA's in general. I drink them when the mood strikes me but when I want one there's no substitute. But anyhoo, I see you like Oskar Blues, and obviously IPA's but their other stuff is great too. That has to be one of the better craft breweries around right now. I've yet to have a bad or even mediocre beer from them.
