The 17 year old Eagle Rare was almost too much in the flavor department. After a couple of bottles of it 15 years ago, I much prefer the 10 year old expression, even though it is marketed at a much higher priced whiskey than it was then.

Too woody?
I find the 10 light in flavor. Closer to Elmer T Lee

After racing my way through a bottle of Bulleit 10 Year Old (you can peruse my write-up on the CW Home Page HERE), I'm currently alternating between Stagg Jr (yes, there's yet another Home Page assessment for you to have a look at HERE) and good old reliable Wild Turkey 101 (soon to be written up on the Home Page).

The Stagg Jr has really surprised me in that it's not all that far off George T. Stagg in terms of quality. Yes, its relative youthfulness does show. But the 'son of Stagg' still packs quite a concentrated 'punch'. No hesitation for me in deciding to buy a second bottle!

As for WT101, it remains a classic (and affordable!) Bourbon.

I just went back for fun and read some of the postings from 2003-2006. It got me to wondering if the whiskies from then have changed in flavor or characteristics or are they the same?

Most of them are younger and more expensive than they were then, probably due to the current American whiskey craze. Dollar for dollar, the Stagg jr is the best, unless you want to spend several hundred dollars on a bottle. Ancient Ancient Age used to be the best value bourbon, offering the Buffalo Trace mashbill at a reasonable price. It's even younger and harsher these days and at the higher price, Beam White Label has supplanted it as best value.

Too much char. It's almost too old. Would have been better at 15 years than 18.

Much, much less. Attempting to not drink at all unless it is with a cigar or out socially. Even then, very limited.
