I've tossed that common knowledge, and have been just fine. My single briar pipe sees 2 bowls a day. I've noticed no difference in taste from the first bowl till now, with various rest times in between. This was an estate pipe, so there was no break in time. I think it's good to let a pipe dry out a bit. But I'm not sure if it needs a full day. A disclaimer here is that the air in my apartment is really, really dry, so that may change things a bit.

This fact will not stop me from acquiring more pipes, as I have found that pipes seem to taste better the more you smoke one particular blend in them, or a least a "genre" of blends. And I don't want my burly smokes to taste like latakia or my Virginias to taste like vanilla.
