A small selection of malt Scotch whiskies this Friday past...

Inchmurrin (Loch Lomond Distillery) Madeira Wood Finish (no age statement) - 46% - A little youthful roughness around the edges, yet displaying a solid core of malt sweetness enhanced by citrus fruit notes from the cask finishing.

Inchmurrin 12 Year Old - 46% - Rounder and more integrated than the preceding. A nice melding of Highland fruitiness and herbal overtones.

Balvenie 15 Year Old Single Barrel - 50.4% - An older bottle from my collection, purchased at least 16 or 17 years ago. One of 300 bottles filled from an ex-Bourbon cask. Typical Balvenie honeyed fruit leading into closing notes of anise and peppermint. Lovely stuff.

Longrow Red 11 Year Old Cabernet France Matured - 55.9% - Not the moderate to full onslaught of peat one might expect from a Longrow, but rather more of a fruit-laden thrust merely enhanced by an underlying smokiness. 9 years in ex-Bourbon oak followed by 2 years in wine casks sourced from South Africa. I sensed a decided pomegranate flavour on the palate.

Laphroaig PX Cask Triple Matured - 48% - Laphroaig's medicine wrapped within a blanket of sherried sweetness. Very palatable if not a great example of the distillery's make.
