Ezra B, Single Barrel, 15 year Bourbon.
Barrel #57, Bottled 1-02 - $21/750ml A wonderfully dark Bourbon - deep mahagony in color, like the stained deck of a beautiful mahogony boat in the morning sun. And at 99 Proof (49.5% alcohol), this is a fairly big Bourbon - very "spirity" on first nose. This disipates quickly after it's been poured, and notes of char and wood predominate. 15 years in the barrel has brought out a lot of wood taste in this Bourbon. However, right up there in the flavor profile is clove, anise/licorice, and hints of vanilla. This higher proof Bourbon is truly a sippin' whiskey, as its power and flavors explode even with small sips. Cutting my secong glass with a small splash of water really smoothed things out quite a bit. But I think I prefer this Bourbon straight up. Because of its flavor and alcohol strength, you might want to consider paring this with a fairly strong and earthy cigar. For me, it was coupled with an ERH Gran Corona. The two got along quite nicely. This Bourbon might not be for everyone, but the price and it's aging makes it worth at least a one time try.
