Jicama?

I've known about this all my life. I had been told that it is a "turnip-like" vegetable, and never had any desire to try it.

basically, I'm saying that anyone who hasn't tasted it needs to give it a try, it's an interesting thing.

I tried it last night, and believe me, it took a lot of nerve to take that first bite. It is not, I repeat, NOT at all like a turnip. It is sweet and fruity tasting, crunchy and juicy.

The best I can do to describe it is that it reminds me of mild tasting apples or pears, but not exactly, as far as flavor. The one we had was very, very sweet. As far as the texture, I believe that it is probably going to fit most people's impression of watermelon rind better than anything else. it's got a crunch, it's full of water, and chews almost like a crisp water chestnut. I think it would be pretty fair to say that it is similar to eating really crisp apple slices, but bland and sweet, as opposed to a tart, flavorful apple.

Really, really weird experience. Looks like a potato. Tastes like nothing else. Hard to eat something like that after peeling and chopping it without a preconceived notion. It was like picking up your stout and finding coke in it.
