That's something I'll try on the next roast Doug, is more beans. I always used a half cup in the Poppery II and that's what I've also been doing with the OP. Your probably right in that more bean volume will definitely slow the action down and retain more heat initially.
I did the rewire as soon as it arrived and I really like having the ability to shut off the heat and let the machine cool the beans. What I was thinking on the slowing first crack was just the fact that with the volume I've been roasting that it is taking the time that it is to get through first crack. I'm not sure what the cause is but like I said, so far every bean I have roasted has had a very pronounced taste improvement consistently so far. It like I just got a shipment of several new beans I hadn't tried before!
