Don Lino Africa torpedo
A new cigar from a somewhat unlikely boom survivor, the Don Lino Africa utilizes an intriguing blend of tobaccos including the unique African filler. My torpedo was a beautiful cigar to look at, with a nice oily wrapper and a great label (somewhat like an Opus X label). Upon lighting, I noticed that the first taste was not harsh or bitter, which is usually a good sign. And the cigar did stay with the good taste and progressed throughout the smoke, a good example of what I like to call a "three stage cigar" in that it had three recognizable stages of flavor that progressed in smooth order.
This cigar is also a good example of the difference between strength of flavor and body. While it is certainly on the stronger side of the cigar bell curve, I would call the flavor medium full but rate the strength as full. It delivered a nicotine kick at the end that set my stomach just a little queasy. Not a lot, but I felt it and also a light tobacco buzz (which unfortunately I do not like but is not a detriment to a cigar). I expected a little bit more complexity of flavor, considering all of the different tobaccos used. But its flavor is nice. I can also see this one really benefitting from some aging. Not that it is young tasting - it is not. It is ready to smoke. It just had a richness that gave me the impression that a couple of years would turn it into a real flavor bomb. It is pleasantly smooth now for a strong cigar - I think that a couple of years of the different tobaccos mingling would do this one a great turn. Overall this is not a cigar that I would buy a lot of at retail price, but I plan to get a couple to age. I would also not hesitate to buy more if a good deal came up. This is not a great cigar, but it is a very good one with the potential to be a great one. Recommended with a solid 89/100
