Nope. Poppers are built for normal household current. which is pretty "dirty." The popper that wanted a Variac or other voltage regulator was the Cafe Rosto. Supposedly, they didn't handle voltage spikes well. They were discontinued some years ago, though I still have one that ronin gifted me. I have it up at our Colorado place because its enclosed chamber handles cold weather better than a popper.
I bought a Variac a while back with the intention of going whole-hog nuts on rewiring a Poppery...Variac on the heating coil to adjust temperature, ceiling fan dial switch on the fan to control airflow, thermocouple to monitor temperature. A real Frankenpoppery! I'ma do it when I retire and have enough free time on my hands to really get my coffee geek on...
