I'll Drink to That! What is your favorite beverage to have with a cigar? Juice? Cola? Beer? Port? Single Malt Scotch? This room is for the discussion of beverages, especially alcoholic beverages that go well with cigars! |

Aaron, you clearly have no concept of what "going strong" means.

I'm going to definitely cut Aaron some slack. I don't like the coffee, but I know that they make the best mixed drinks that can be had here, and there are plenty of locations. it was a hell of a business model, that worked great, and if it is having problems, what business doesn't when the market changes or outgrows even the best business model?
Their coffee is what their customers like. Whoopee. Other people don't like it and should go elsewhere. Like home, maybe? My experience is that Starbucks people kiss my ass when I go there. The place is clean and pleasant. That goes a long way towards occasionally encountering someone who acts like he works at walmart (so far, I haven't.) Whatever people expect from starbucks, well, they are either going to be satisfied, or they are going to be unhappy, and that is just a personal choice. That depends on their tastes and prejudices. The last thing I'd like to point out is that McDonalds wouldn't be serving their espresso stuff if Starbucks hadn't made money putting the desire for the product into the market. They were perfectly happy handing out mystery meat burgers and "the world's best fries" until they started thinking about how they could make more money. Hell, I can buy a "cappuccino" at the gas station now, thanks to Starbucks. Above all, Aaron is a bright, ethical, and hardworking guy who is giving his all for the company he works for, and I'm not speaking for everyone but damn, that is enough to earn my respect. |

6,688 posts. I'd say that he is clearly a member of the community. He also talks about cigars, too. I even view him as sort of an authority.

It's no secret that I'm not a big fan of Starbucks. Lord knows I've busted Aaron's balls on the subject many times, and Lord knows he's always dealt with that in fine fashion. Still and all, you have to give credit where credit is due.
Even the most rabid Starbucks hater would have to admit that the company has played a pivotal role in changing the way the American public perceives coffee. You don't have to like their products to see that plainly, and intellectual honesty demands recognition of that fact. That many more people in this country no longer think what comes out of a Folger's can is the be-all and end-all of coffee (as compared to their pre-Starbucks view) is A Good Thing in my book. Starbucks is kind of like McDonalds in two pertinent respects: First, there's always one nearby, and second, you always know what you're going to get when you go there. I've been known to drop in for a dry cappuccino when I'm traveling on business and can't take home-roast along, and I've had way worse coffee......I think I'll just leave it at that.

As it is, the three things I like best about starbucks is that there is one in the basement of the college library, the local target store, and 4 blocks from my office. for $2 I can get a big assed cup of coffee, and even if I have to taint it with cream and sugar before I can make it chuggable, that is still a good thing. My wife has tried Mc coffee, and she don't like it. She said that it isn't particularly cheap, either. To me it tasted like Carageenan. It's too bad we don't have a dunkin donuts. |

Aaron, you shouldn't take it so personal. We bash Microsoft as well, but well you get that point I hope. For my chain store coffee I prefer Peets and Yeah I used to work for them as a trainer, but everyone has their opinions and you just can't change that. BTW at the last SCAA conference I was at, Dunkin Donuts was the largest supplier of coffee in the US. I'm just sayin.

I absolutely understand that the company doesn't produce the worlds absolute best coffee. In fact, I enjoy my homeroast coffee (well, some...not this crap that I roasted up recently ), more than most of Starbucks' roasts. I want you guys to know that I didn't start this thread to 'sell' anything, or push my company on others. I've been here for, almost three years, I KNOW what most members think of the company! LOL. VIA was catching a ton of publicity from major news networks, and everyone around me was talking about it, so I wanted to see what you all thought of the product. Honestly, for almost anyone on CW to enjoy the product, that would be a HUGE HUGE success in my eyes. This is why I made the thread...to see if I anyone actually enjoyed the product, and others' thoughts. When I first heard VIA was going to be released, mannnnn I hated on the idea. Now, sales are showing that I am a dumbass and that's why I'm not in the R&D department. LOL. (Keep in mind, this is still being test marketed in Chicago, Seattle, and the UK (London specifically I believe). I hope in the future, I am still able to share news of the company with you guys. Some of you may not care, but some people just love reading about coffee and innovative ideas, so hopefully I can keep posting... Brian and Doug, thank you both very much for the support. It means a lot. Finally, that's great that Jerry's been here for 8 years. I think it's very unprofessional to bash another company in the manner that he does, but it doesn't change the fact that he's a contributing member of our community.

Good for you for being proud of the company that you work for...not too many people can feel that way about their place of work!
As for your comment "I think it's very unprofessional to bash another company in the manner that he does", let me restate that the only reason I hate Starbuck$ is because I'm jealous that I don't have a group of bean counters in the back counting money. Nuff said.

GROUP HUG!!!
Now, as to the subject of the thread in the first place, I haven't tried the Via and specifically didn't ask for any because instant coffee just sucks. Not sure I think it's a great marketing move, but what the hey? Gotta drive growth somehow...and it can't be any worse than Sanka.
