A Stout Man Living in an IPA World

Not an IPA fan, at all.

Why is it so damn hard to find great consistent available stout/porter/brown Ale? Ninety-five percent of the non-craft brew pubs/bars offer the obligatory Guinness and that's about it. While Guinness is an ok stout it's not a great stout. Yet the pub/bar will offer two pages of IPAs either in bottles or on tap.

And most craft brew breweries offer a stout but its flavor profile is that of an IPA. WTF?! Or, the stout is so damn sweet it's sickening. Or, it's basically chilled coffee.

A truly delicious well balanced stout is a rarity it really is. I am forever on a mission to locate a great stout. I found a truly tasty one recently but they charged over nine bucks a bottle. Mofo please.

Any other dark liquid lovers trapped in this IPA consumed world with me?

I used to enjoy IPAs then came the race to a million IBUs. I've since gravitated much more to darker beers, with Marzens a real favorite as well as other malty beers.

I can usually find a dark beer around here, but the IPA's are the darlings. Funny thing, I think the IBU's get so high that all you taste is hops.

Finding balanced beers is not easy

So true as I think back years ago IPAs were not bad beers but it does seem now it's double hops with hops with a lil more hops.

Haven't tried the Yuengling Porter will give it a go. Thanks for the info.

It seems an almost unstoppable trend in taprooms to follow the IBU race. Finding Porters and Stouts there is often a fool's errand.

Stouts and Porters are generally winter releases. Expect them when the clamor for Oktoberfests has died down. In the mean time, look for Stone Porters and Stouts at liquor stores. Also Deschuttes Porter and Breckenridge Vanilla Porter. They are available year-round.

in Chicago we have Revolutions Porter year round but I don't think they go much out of the area

I was told by a friend who home brews that hops cover a multitude of brewing sins and errors.

when they start using steam to extract hop 'juice' to add to beers, it is just not beer IMHO

IPA s became a "mine is bigger contest".

I, too, prefer British Isles type beers, with an occasional foray into the other realm.

The IBU contests have gotten out of hand.

I can't stand IPA's. Just plain nasty IMO.

Bars and non-craft brew pubs stock what sells, jeepdad. My guess is you aren't drinking enough. Or going to the wrong places. Most of our local breweries have at least one dark beer for sale. Some porters and the rest stouts. Try to find a local brewery and support them.

a problem I have with craft stouts is a lot of them are variations on a theme and have other flavors woven in. Or so it seems.

IPA's sell. Kind of funny because I can remember back when IPA's started popping up that people didn't seem to care for them.

They remind me of Starbucks... liked because they are popular/trendy
