Esteban Carreras Covenant Toro

Believe it or not, there's actually a coolish breeze on the Sunday, Father's Day in Greater New Orleans. I extend a warm Happy Father's Day to all of my Cigar Weekly friends, as well as any of you who may have stumbled upon this cigar review. I got this specimen in a sampler of four Esteban Carreras cigars from my best buddy Stan, mrdiver on this board.

Like my last review, I am, once again, hopelessly late to the party. I'm not breaking much new ground here, except for my own. This cigar, as I did some research, made its debut at the 2012 International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailers' trade show. As American Picker Mike Wolfe likes to say, "it's got the LOOK, man...." Now, Esteban Carreras' website, they describe this cigar as having a "deep, reddish brown color" from its Nicaraguan Habano Oscuro capa.

I differ with that, this is a extraordinarily dark, rich wrapper, but it fits its name "oscuro" which means, literally, dark. It envelops a Nicaraguan puro, and it's folded over the foot of the cigar. I am a sucker for things like this, shaggy foot cigars, perfectos, or these where the wrapper encloses even the foot. Don't ask me why, it is simply something I have come to prefer. It's also box-pressed, and the wrapper is pretty, although it has a few veins.

It is lit, and is leathery right from the off, not a bad thing. It's almost flat, but doesn't quite get there, so the flavor is acceptable and it should be enjoyable. I get a bit of sweet cedar, as well, which would be true to its oscuro nature.

I'm about an inch or so into this cigar, now, it's tunneling, but man is it putting out a ton of smoke simply burning on its own. If you may have bothered to read my reviews you know, like most of you, I LOVE cigars that give generous smoke, and this one is that. The character has not changed a whole lot, but it is enjoyable.

Do I touch up the burn issue or not? Decisions, decisions.

Edit #1
I'm to the band area, now, the burn issue is not quite even, but it's getting there, and doing so on its own. The flavor has remained consistent, it's not overly complex, but it is enjoyable. The finish on this is kind of light, which I don't mind in any way.

Edit#2
I'm closing toward the head of the cigar, the flavor is still consistent and tasty, however the cigar, itself, is getting really soft. I'm guessing this is due to the weather, it's nice and breezy, but the omnipresent south Louisiana humidity may be affecting the cigar. It went out a bit, just recently, but the smoke is still abundant and flavorful.

I would smoke another of these, it's worthy of revisiting.
