Gurkha Cellar Reserve Koi

I made a stop by a cigar shop in Fairhope today (that's pronounced "Fayahope" here in the deep South ), Bouch's Premium Cigars. They have a VERY nice and large humidor selection. I knew they carried several lines that my usual shop does not, so I enjoyed looking over their nice selection. As I was chatting with one of the owners, he was pointing out some of his favorites and at one point VERY graciously offered me a Gurkha Cellar Reserve compliments of the shop. He was very high on this particular cigar and asked that I give it a try and then let him know what I thought.
I looked forward to trying this, so here's what I found....
The "Koi" is a small perfecto offering from Gurkha, measuring 4x58. The girth was not really a problem, with it being a perfecto the "business" ends of this cigar are actually quite a bit smaller. The Koi is a Dominican puro using 15-yr old Dominican tobacco filler, a Criollo 1998 wrapper and an Olor binder. I'm a fan of perfectos, not sure why, maybe I just "appreciate" the skill in involved in rolling these and the fact that it's just something different. I also enjoy the experience of lighting one up and getting that feel of the cigar "opening up" as it burns past that initial taper.
this was a good looking cigar with the wrapper having a nice oily appearance. With this vitola being so short, there wasn't too much of a wrapper area to "judge", but what there was, looked good.
After lighting up I got the expected slightly tight draw, with not much in the way of smoke production, no surprise so far. As the burn line started working it's way down the cigar it finally started to open up a bit, but still did not produce much in the way of smoke. The burn itself was a little ragged and needed to be touched up several times. This cigar was described as Med/Full.....I kept waiting for that profile to emerge....it never did. I kept smoking, and hoping......smoking, and hoping.....I never got "anything" from this cigar. There was not much in the way of flavor , sorta made me think of smoking straw. The strength was medium at best. There's not much else I can say about this cigar other than I was glad it was a very short stick.
I really wanted to like this cigar, it had a nice presentation, but it just didn't suit my taste preferences at all.
BUT, my gracious thanks to Jack of Bouch's for allowing me the opportunity to give this one a try.
I would have to give the Gurkha Cellar Reserve 1 out of 5 stars in my book.
