IPCPR Cigar: GMD Heritage 1492 Tradicionales
Here is another offering from Global Marketing and Distribution (GMD) their Heritage 1492 Tradicionales. This cigar is made at Hendrix Kelner, Jr.'s factory, Keller Boutique Factory which he has founded after 19 years at his Father's Tabadom, the Davidoff factory. It was given to me at the IPCPR show by Trey "live2fish" Harris. This is the Toro and it checks in at six inches by fifty (6" x50)
Like all their cigars, so far, this guy is pretty. It has a filler blend comprised of tobaccos from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and the United States. It's bound by Nicaraguan leaf, and beautifully wrapped with a lovely Connecticut shade capa from Ecuador. It's lit flawlessly, and at the outset is drawing quite well. From GMD's own literature, they rate the strength or body of this cigar at six out of ten leaves . As we begin our evening I am experiencing some light coffee flavor followed by black pepper, fairly strong black pepper. It lit well, two matches, as I do not count the one that went out on its own the second I struck it. After the first quarter inch the burn is getting itself straight and the char is razor-thin. So far, the smoke is ample although a touch thin on the draw whilst it seems to be thicker emerging from the foot. 1.The first ash dropped at almost the inch mark, not great, but acceptable. What is positive is the ligero leaf sticking out of the center of the filler bunch. At this point the flavor is shifting and I'm starting to pick up an earthy, almost malty and hoppy feeling. Interesting. Here, too, there is abundant flavor, but it is right at that point GMD indicated, just barely stronger than medium, and that isn't a bad thing at all. 2. I approach the first of the two bands, the strength has remained quite consistent, but the flavor continued to change. It has gotten a bit sweet these last couple inches and the construction is still great, straight, and sharp. That ligero leaf is still sticking out of the light gray ash. The finish is a bit charry and now a touch "bread-like." 3. The finale is drawing near, the burn is still nicely straight and sharp. The smoke is starting to heat, though, and the flavor is a bit stronger as a result. However it is changing a little less, now. Although it's not the very best, this is a quality cigar made by a factory that is in the ascendancy with a fantastic pedigree. This is a really good one. GMD is off to a flying start.
