I'll Drink to That! What is your favorite beverage to have with a cigar? Juice? Cola? Beer? Port? Single Malt Scotch? This room is for the discussion of beverages, especially alcoholic beverages that go well with cigars! |

My first home roast
Well, ok it's my second, but the first one I did last night has mixed results. I did it in a cast iron frying pan and while most of the beans turned out good, I charred quite a few.
This is what my first roast in a hot air popper resulted in: I had to do about 2oz at a time or they wouldn't spin in the chamber but it only took around five minutes to do each. I have an exhaust fan in my basement so smoke wasn't an issue. Pretty cool stuff!

And so it begins.
Enjoy the ride, Jim. Well done!

Is that a blend of two different varieties Jim? I don't know if my eyes are playing tricks on me or it's just my imagination, but it looks like some of those beans are fairly large while others almost look like peaberries.

I don't remember the particular bean at the moment (package is downstairs) but they're all from the same Burman batch. It looks like I got some a little darker than others, I'll blame that on the cheap popper not doing the job an expensive tumbler would do.

Well done, sir! Welcome to the world of truly fresh coffee. No looking back for you now...
The main issue I see is that it kind of looks like you got different roast levels in the different batches you ran. That's not necessarily a problem, as many beans do quite well with the "melange" treatment - you can get very complex flavors that way, as long as you don't get a batch so light that you wind up with serious astringency in the cup. If your popper isn't up to the task, Jim, look for another one. Two ounces is a very small batch, seems to me. I can do more than twice that much in my Original Poppery, in just about the same amount of time. Works out to enough for a 2 liter thermal carafe, which is what I brew during the week. One roast, one day, no problem.

It's a small popper Doug, it'll be fine for me since I don't typically drink coffee all day long. A batch like this will last me a while.
I brewed a pot this morning and it was fantastic!

Don't know about weights but my Toastmaster 6203 (buy.com still has them for $23.90 with free shipping) will handle a slightly rounded 1/2 cup of green beans nicely. It will do three of those in about 1/2 hour and that will last me a week so roasting about about once a week is working well.

Homeroast will spoil you for life. My GF and I purchased about 20 lbs around Sept. and by Oct I had them all roasted up, just in time for winter ....there's nothing quite like homeroasted coffee.
