2005 German Riesling
Some of us have heard of the hubbub surrounding the 2005 German harvest, especially as it relates to Riesling wines. For myself, I've begun to search out Rieslings of this year from both Germany and Alsace. And I'll have to say that - so far - I'm impressed, with even as mundane an example as Fernand Engel's Riesling Alsatian Reserve offering a solid dose of petrol-tinged fruit and substance (just barely over $15CDN, by the way).
This Saturday afternoon past, Peg and I stopped by a gourmet provisioner in our 'old' neighbourhood and picked up some fresh scallops and tiger shrimp to have for dinner. I simply pan-seared them (in sesame oil), and then made a reduction sauce with Riesling, lemon zest and lemon juice, slivers of fresh ginger, sea salt, pepper, mint and a dash of maple syrup. The wine I chose to serve alongside was a 2005 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Kabinett from Markus Molitor... Heaven! Clocking in at only 7.5%ABV, this Riesling put a 2004 Zeltinger Himmelreich from Selbach (served a couple of nights ago) in the shade... Archetypal Mosel Granny Smith apple sweet-tartness allied to a crisp, acidic slate backdrop. Just classic in proportion, it paired with the seafood perfectly. The cost? About $22CDN - a relatively modest sum for a white wine of such quality and flavour intensity. Now I'm thinking I may have to 'expand' my shopping budget when it comes to those 2005s.
