Rough grain/sandblasted is a great way of putting fine briar that is full of visual flaws to work. The stuff grows in poor soil, and it is common to have flaws and voids in it, the beautiful thing about it, is that the rough soil conditions are also what make it so hard, tight, and attractive. I have a couple of sandblasted pipes similar to that. One of them, I stripped of the black lacquer, and it looks nice with the black stain remaining over brown briar.
