UK Supermarket Cigars: Review 8 - King Edward Coronet

King Edward has gone down in cigar folklore and legend following his repeal of a smoking ban. His mother, Queen Victoria, had banned smoking in her presence and in the palace. However when Edward sat on the throne as Edward VII he famously declared "Gentlemen, you may smoke." These cigars pay homage to the British king.

Ask the majority of folk in the UK about a King Edward cigar and their minds will immediately go to the larger King Edward Corona. However these have become increasingly difficult to get recently, with the only shops selling them (outside of Tobacconists) are smaller, independent shops. The cigar that I am reviewing here is the King Edward Coronet, which is considerably smaller than a corona with a length of 4 inches and ring gauge of 28. At £5.25 for a pack of 5, these work out at an inexpensive £1.05 per stick. I purchased these from a small, independent shop, however they are available in the supermarkets.

From the start the taste is mildly earthy notes, with a smooth and creamy feel in the mouth. After the first two minutes a mild and very pleasant spice has formed in the taste, however this is all in the flavouring and not bitter at all.

After the first third, the taste is slightly spicier. At this point, one thing that I'm noticing is that I was getting quite a bit of pieces of the wrapper in my mouth. This resulted in my having to wipe my tongue and rinse my mouth out as I'm not a fan of pieces of the cigar falling in my mouth whilst I'm smoking.

Typically for a supermarket cigar, the flavours are not very complex. However in saying that, this was one of the better budget cigars that I've sampled. The smoke time was just under 20 minutes. After the smoke was finished there was a rather pleasant lingering spice on the tongue.

Overall I'd say that this is one that I'd quite happily smoke again, it has similar notes to the Panatella Slim, but is slightly larger and lasts quite a bit longer. It's not going to rival a Cuban, but at £1.05 its not meant to either.

These reviews have been interesting...have you found anything worth smoking regularly yet?

That's the last of the Panatella sized cigars, however there are two Supermarkets that offer some larger sticks, I'll take a look at those next. None of those smaller cigars, in my opinion, are worth smoking unless you want a very quick smoke.
