Glenmorangie Quintana Ruban five stars?

Glenmorangie set from Christmas had a sampler of quinta Ruban, a port cask finished version, and I think that it's magnificent. Reviews have been mostly about great flavors of Orange peel and so fort, but it's not so snobbishly complex. it's light and smooth, with some citrus and Apple on the nose, but the smokiness on the taste and a hint of peat are overwhelmingly good.

The last time I had something genuinely set me back in my chair it was Jameson black cask. These were genuine moments of epiphany.

This is what whisky should be like every time.

Every year Glenmorangie puts out a sampler set The standard isn't much different than any other single malt in the range, but the samplers always include some repurposed wine barrels. The Madera many years ago was good.

I'm really surprised to see that mad dog gave a similar review years ago.

re-purposing port, sherry, bourbon, rum and Madeira casks is a long standing way to finish scotch whisky. There are several port finished scotches you might try to find. Arran and Cragganmore more have them.

Glad you enjoyed it, much deserved

I tasted Arran's take on Port cask finishing a short time ago. Here are my tasting notes...

Arran Port Cask Finish (50%ABV). No doubt about it. Arran, despite being in operation little more than two decades, is a great distillery. This whisky was all about sweet fruit (berries and, perhaps, apricots as well) bound to oak derived spiciness and just a tinge of the seashore. Very well done.

The Cragganmore version is a worthwhile interpretation as well.

I had a couple of bottles of the QR over the past couple of years. They're getting harder to find around here now. The more common release on the local shelves now is the Lasanta, finished in Oloroso Sherry casks. Although I prefer the QR, both are quite good.

I've yet to come across the 3rd in the series, the Nectar D'or, supposedly finished in French Sauternes casks.

It's a good one... Quite honeyed, as one would expect from the finishing process, but not lacking in verve by any stretch of the imagination. If you're partial to well-aged (but not too syrupy-sweet) Caribbean rums, you'll more than likely enjoy the Nectar d'Or a lot.
