I received my first used pipe yesterday. An Algerian Briar, made in France. Long straight shank with a pretty grain. Good starter pipe. I immediately started cleaning procedures as outlined in the video. The previous owner had done a cursory job. Cosmetically it looked decent. He had polished the stem and wiped the bowl. Run a reamer through it. Before watching the video, I would have thought it was okay. I took the stem off and could see right away That the inside had not been seriously cleaned. I used denatured alcohol and lots of pipe cleaners. The shank brush got out lots of crud. I used the salt method to neutralize the bowl. After everything was clean, I used pipe sweetener for a final sterilizer. I polished the stem and waxed the bowl. Looks pretty good! Still smells like a pipe. But not the strong dirty smell of before. For me, the DVD was a good purchase. Seeing how a thorough cleaning is done helped me know what to expect in the process.
Tobacco should be coming today.
